Yahoo Sued by Imprisoned Chinese Dissidents for Failing to Keep Promises
Yahoo is being sued by a group of formerly imprisoned Chinese dissidents for failing to keep commitments the company made 10 years ago.
According to the lawsuit, Yahoo pledged to give support to the families of men jailed after the company shared their personal information with Chinese authorities.
Yahoo also promised to create a relief fund for those imprisoned for expressing views online, but the suit alleges that less than $4 million of the $17-million fund was ever actually applied, with the remainder being “illegally diverted for expenditures that have nothing to do with providing humanitarian assistance.”
Verizon last year acquired Yahoo for more than $4 billion in a deal that is expected to close this quarter.
