Mojio and Bosch Enable Collision Alerts for Any Car
Buying a brand new car has its benefits, one of them being the ability to take advantage of next-generation connectivity features. Rest easy if money’s tight: one company wants to bring those upgrades to everyone.
The Vancouver-based Mojio has partnered with Bosch to release a new IoT emergency response solution for almost any vehicle on the road. Announced at CES, this new feature adds crash detection and emergency call (eCall) response to Mojio’s existing connected car offering. So far, close to one million customers across Europe and North America have used Mojio’s platform, powered by a wide network of providers, including Deutsche Telekom, T-Mobile US and Telus.
With a simple plug-and-play device that fits into a car’s OBD-II port and syncs with a mobile app, the new emergency response feature uses a crash detection algorithm and eCall services from Bosch to sense collisions. Depending on the severity of the crash, the system can send an alert to Mojio’s cloud and send out a call for emergency services to respond.
“Enhanced driver safety, and the peace-of-mind that comes with it, will be a powerful benefit of connected mobility,” said Mike Mansuetti, president of Bosch in North America.
The service will cost roughly $10 a month and can be used in essentially any vehicle, regardless of the make or model. Other benefits of Mojio’s platform include wifi connectivity, specific notifications for engine issues as well as recalls, a tracker for stolen vehicles, and more.
This new crash detection service uses accelerometer sensor data to determine exactly how severe a collision is in real-time. Alerts are sent to authorities as well as friends or family based on the crash. Roll-out for this feature will begin in mid-2019.
Bosch announced an investment and partnership with Mojio back in June 2018, and this is the first announcement to come from that agreement.
