Mighty Yell Studios Wins Gaming Pitch Competition at EGLX

The Canadian independent video game scene is alive and well.

The EGLX video game convention took place this past weekend and it featured a live pitch competition where several video game studios and companies competed to try and win a share of up to $200,000 in investments. Mighty Yell Studios, OddBird Studio, Falling Squirrel and the Games Marketing Agency all took home a share of that prize, totalling $95,000.

Mighty Yell Studios won the biggest share of the pool, taking home $50,000 for The Big Con, a non-violent video game about crime that encourages using innovative conversation mechanics. It is the studio’s first game.

OddBird Studio took home $30,000 for Super Random Heroes, a quirky game that details a world where one corporation sells subpar superpowers to everyday citizens.

Falling Squirrel took home $10,000 for The Vale, an interactive audio game that can be played and enjoyed by the visually impaired and regularly-sighted gamers alike.

Finally, the Games Marketing Agency took home $5,000 for their pitch, a scalable marketing agency with flexible options for developers in Toronto.

The pitch contest was held in partnership with the York Angels Investors group and solicited pitches from video and board game companies, gaming tech and gaming gear. Winning companies could negotiate an investment of up to $50,000, which Mighty Yell took full advantage of.

The four winners received capital in exchange for a percentage of their project’s net profits over the first two years of initial release. The profit share is commensurate from five to 10 per cent based on the total amount invested, so Mighty Yell will share 10 per cent of profits with their investors.

Each winner will also receive $50,000 in marketing across the EGL network, which includes gaming news sites like Destructoid and other avenues of exposure.

Judges for the pitches included the EGLX founder and CEO, senior game developers, and select investors from York Angels.

In total, 27 companies applied to pitch at EGLX, and six were selected to pitch. The companies that did not receive funding were Tivitas Interactive and Upptack Studios.

It’s been a good week for many of these studios, as Mighty Yell, OddBird and Falling Squirrel all made the shortlist for the Ubisoft Indie Series, which took place last week. Alientrap Games ended up winning, but Falling Squirrel took home second place and $25,000.

EGLX has evolved into one of Canada’s largest video game conventions, attracting over 12,000 people to the event every year in Toronto with tournaments, exhibitors and more.
