Right Health has announced the acquisition of Akira Medical.

The Toronto-based Right Health is a healthcare company founded in 2016 that provides a combination of virtual and in-person care to optimize the health and engagement of Canadians. Akira Medical, also founded in 2016, is an on-demand healthcare platform that gives users instant access to practitioners via text and video chat.

Akira lets Canadians connect with a family doctor or other medical specialist immediately, hoping to reduce wait times and clinic walk-ins around the country. The company has done over 20,000 patient consults since their inception.

“There’s no doubt that healthcare in Canada is going through a transformation,” says John Mozas, Right Health co-founder in a statement. “New models are shifting control from the system to the patient, and Akira not only provides patients access to practitioners but also a digital connection to their medical record.”

The acquisition of Akira Health is a natural move for Right Health as they progress towards a goal of virtual healthcare for all Canadians. Right Health brings a deep knowledge of clinical operations and combines it with Akira Medical’s proven method of digital delivery. The Akira platform will stay with the same name, just with the added boon of having new knowledge and experience imparted within it.

Akira co-founders Dustin Walper, Taha Bandkwala and Matt Zukowski will join Right Health in new leadership positions.

“The acquisition accelerates Akira’s mission to put great care into the pocket of every Canadian,” says Dustin Walper, Akira founder and CEO. “With Right Health backed by one of the most experienced healthcare teams in Canada, Akira has the opportunity to impact the care gap in our healthcare system for the better.”

Right Health will continue to build out primary care clinics with innovative technology. Akira Medical will compliment the new spaces by acting as the virtual assistant, serving the community in new and unique ways. Together the companies hope to bring world-class healthcare to everyone in the country while dramatically improving patient and provider experiences.
