There are millions of applications in today’s mobile ecosystem. But a single company owns the four most popular mobile apps in the world.

While Netflix generates the most revenue of any single mobile app, according to Sensor Tower Store Intelligence data, Facebook thoroughly dominates the downloads arena. So far this year, WhatsApp is the most-downloaded mobile app in the world. In second? Facebook. In third? Messenger. And in fourth? Instagram.

What do all four of those apps have in common? Facebook owns all of them.

Facebook dominates mobile app downloads worldwide.

There are a few close pursuits: Snapchat came in fifth for installs in the second quarter and Uber edged out Facebook for downloads in the US during the same period. But nothing compares to a single entity operating the four most-installed apps across both Apple’s App Store and Google’s Play Store combined.

Overall, more than 13 billion non-game apps were downloaded during this year’s second quarter, up 12 per cent. Nearly five billion of those downloads occurred on the App Store, while more than eight billion occurred on Google Play.
