One of the new features for the next-generation iPhone, due this fall, could be 3D facial scanning technology that allows users to unlock their device with their face, according to a report from Bloomberg.

Quoth Bloomberg:

Apple is testing an improved security system that allows users to log in, authenticate payments, and launch secure apps by scanning their face . . . It can scan a user’s face and unlock the iPhone within a few hundred milliseconds. It is designed to work even if the device is laying flat on a table, rather than just close up to the face.

The feature may not be ready in time for the launch of the next iPhone, however, but Apple is actively seeking an alternative to replace its Touch ID fingerprint scanner.

Apple is working on other technologies for future iPhones, too, such as a chip dedicated specifically to artificial intelligence tasks.

The new iPhone is also expected to have an edge-to-edge OLED display, according to leading rumors.
