Apple this week announced that it has paid out more than $70 billion to App Store developers worldwide since 2008.

“People everywhere love apps and our customers are downloading them in record numbers,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing, who says downloads are up 70% over the past year.

The App Store, which is available in 155 countries, has seen active paid subscriptions rise 58% year-over-year, according to Apple.

“Seventy billion dollars earned by developers is simply mind-blowing,” continued Schiller.

Next week Apple hosts its annual Worldwide Developers Conference in San Jose, where it could unveil a Siri-based smart home device and new Macbooks.
