Netflix has completed its rollout of a new rating system: instead of rating shows on a scale of one to five stars, users will now be prompted to give content either a thumbs up or a thumbs down.
The company, which first announced the coming update early last month, experimented with thumbs up and down last year and found through A/B testing that users were 200% more likely to click a thumbs up or down than offer a five star rating, according to Todd Yellin, Netflix’s vice president of product.
“We are retiring our five-star rating system and replacing it with a simpler and more intuitive thumbs-up and thumbs-down,” says Cameron Johnson, Director of Product Innovation. “Netflix has had star ratings for much of our history, but we’ve learned through over a year of testing that while we’ve used stars to help you personalize your suggestions, many of our members are confused about what they do.”
Netflix has 94 million members across 190 countries who consume more than 125 million hours of shows and movies per day.
