Car2go, a one-way carsharing service, plans to add thousands of four-door, five-passenger Mercedes vehicles to its fleet this year.
Members in Toronto and Vancouver will be the first in Canada to experience new Mercedes-Benz car2gos beginning in February, before adding Calgary and Montreal later this year.
What’s interesting is that Car2go anticipates “Mercedes-Benz vehicles will comprise the majority of its North American fleet by the end of 2017.”
The decision hails from a pilot program, which Car2go described as “extremely successful.”
“Our 2017 CLA and GLA vehicles have proven to be two of our best sellers with Canadian drivers,” said Brian Fulton, CEO of Mercedes-Benz Canada. “We are pleased to deliver these outstanding new vehicles to car2go’s Canadian members, who will now have exclusive carsharing access to Mercedes-Benz vehicles.”
Car2go has more than 800,000 members in North America and 2.2 million worldwide.
“Mercedes-Benz has been a strong partner of car2go since we launched in 2009, delivering car2go’s original network of smart fortwo vehicles,” said Paul DeLong, CEO of car2go North America. “Together, car2go and Mercedes-Benz are taking a next big step by giving our members choices the competition can’t match—the best car on the road for parking in tight city spaces with our smart fortwo, and now our larger and more luxurious Mercedes-Benz vehicles.”
In 2016, Car2go experienced 43-percent year over year membership growth. According to an August 2016 carsharing report by Frost & Sullivan, the global carsharing market is expected to grow from 7.9 million people in 2015 to over 36 million people by 2025.
Every 1.4 seconds, a Car2go member takes a trip in one of 14,000 cars across eight countries on three continents. Since inception, Car2go has helped its members take 74 million trips totaling 515 million kilometers.
