Nintendo Finds Success on iPhone with Two of 2016’s Most Popular Apps

In a matter of months, Nintendo went from being nowhere on iOS to dominating the app store.

According to new data from Apple, Pokémon Go was the most-downloaded app on the App Store in 2016 across all categories. This is hardly a surprise as the game was a worldwide sensation when it launched in the summer. And while the game was developed by Niantic, Nintendo created the Pokémon franchise and takes a cut of sales.

And then there is Super Mario Run, which made history with more than 40 million downloads in just four days after its release. Despite launching in very late in the year, the game made Apple’s top 10 most-downloaded apps.

Other apps in the top 10 include risma, Reigns, Procreate, and Lumino City.

The App Store has 2.2 million apps and Apple has paid developers $60 billion since 2008.
