Uber Submits to State, Pulls Autonomous Fleet from San Francisco
Uber has pulled its fleet of autonomous vehicles off the streets of San Francisco after California’s state Department of Motor Vehicles revoked the registration of 16 Uber cars.
Uber launched its fleet in the city without seeking permits, and that even the registrations were incorrect because the company failed to mark its cars as test vehicles.
Jean Shiomoto, director of the DMV, says Uber is welcome to apply for the proper permits and try again through the correct process.
“We have stopped our self-driving pilot in California as the DMV has revoked the registrations for our self-driving cars,” Uber said in a statement.
“I appreciate the action that Uber has taken in the interest of public safety,” Shiomoto wrote in a letter to Uber.
A self-driving car was caught on video running a red light in San Francisco the day after Uber illegally launched autonomous vehicles in the city.
