It seem that Google is losing confidence in the idea of building its own self-driving car from scratch.
The company’s pivot toward partnerships, first reported by The Information, was led by Alphabet CEO Larry Page, who concluded that Google’s original ambition was impractical.
He may be right: even Apple, with a virtually unlimited budget, has lost interest in building its own autonomous vehicle.
Reportedly, Fiat Chrysler may be developing a prototype for Google, and the Silicon Valley giant is now looking at launching a ride-sharing service—based on a self-driving fleet—as early as next year.
It’s expected that Google will make a news announcement regarding its autonomous projects later today.
