Before We Sleep, When We Awaken, On The Toilet: Just How Much Time Do We Spend on Our Phones?

Everyone has a smartphone, and most are addicted to them on some level. So just how much time do we spend interacting with these tiny, mobile computers?

The average adult in the spends 30 minutes a week, or 26 hours each year, using their smartphone on the toilet, according to a new survey of 2,000 adults commissioned by Dig That Gold, a mobile game that gives away real gold bars—a figure that doubles to 54 hours per year among those aged between 18 and 34.

“It’s amazing to see just how much time people are spending on their phone doing random things in random places,” said Sean McNicholas, CEO of Project M, the game studio behind Dig That Gold. “It is no secret that people are on their mobile device nearly every hour of every day, but now we can see how integrated smartphones really are within our day-to-day activities.”

Checking their smartphone has become a key part of people’s daily routine, with 60 hours a year spent looking at a smartphone first thing in the morning or last thing at night, the survey shows. For 18-34 year olds this figures jumps to 106 hours across a year.

Millennials are spending over two days of the year taking selfies or checking their appearance with a smartphone, the equivalent of five months across their adult life.

We look at our mobile devices on average 85 times a day, according to the independent survey of 2,000 adults.
