Mobile Commerce Has Officially Arrived: One-Third of Online Sales Now Hail from Phones, Tablets

Black Friday and Cyber Monday are breaking ecommerce records left and right—especially in the mobile space.

It seems that mobile commerce has truly arrived this shopping season. According to data from PayPal, roughly one-third of all total payment volume for Black Friday was on mobile, with an average spend amount of more than $60.

“People aren’t just using their phones to connect, they’re using it to snag a deal,” says Kerry Reynolds, Head Consumer Marketing, PayPal Canada. “Convenience is a key driver as shoppers take instant advantages of the retailer deals they see on-the-go on their smartphones either through email sales alerts or through ads on their social media channels.”

Data from Adobe suggests mobile devices now generate half of all ecommerce traffic and at least one-third of transactions. According to Adobe, more than $1 billion was spent on smartphones and tablets on Black Friday—a new record by far.
