No, Apple Is Not Buying McLaren—But The Idea Was Considered

In September, rumors stirred of Apple buying supercar maker McLaren for around $2 billion. It seemed a little ludicrous, and the rumor quietly faded.

Turns out the report was accurate—sort of.

McLaren CEO Mike Flewitt told Reuters this week that the company did indeed discuss options with Apple, but a deal was never proposed. And according to Flewitt, only an investment would have been possible, as McLaren is not interested in selling.

“They visited,” he told Reuters. “We talked. We talked about what they did. We talked about what we did. They toured. It never matured to a definitive proposition.”

Apple’s last billion-dollar acquisition was Beats in 2014.
