Twitter to Shut Down Vine

Twitter is pulling the plug on Vine, the video-based social network the company bought back in 2012 when the service first launched. Vine has been on life support for a while now, so the news surprised few.

“Today, we are sharing the news that in the coming months we’ll be discontinuing the mobile app,” Vine said online.

Existing Vines will remain online, but new ones will not be made. As for what’s next, Vine’s answer is vague at best.

“We’ll be working closely with creators to make sure your questions are answered and will work hard to do this the right way,” the company said. “We will notify you through the app when we start to change things.”

In addition to shuttering Vine, Twitter is also laying off several hundred employees as the company seeks financial stability and user growth in an increasingly skeptical market.
