Apple is making updates to Apple TV. The company believes the future of television is apps. In one year, developers have built 8,000 apps for Apple TV.
By the end of the year, Apple says a major game will be added: Minecraft. The announcement was made at a product launch in Cupertino.
“Now, you can build new worlds on your Apple TV, and play with your friends using iPhones and iPads,” said CEO Tim Cook.
Apple showcased how Apple TV can let users stream live social media reactions while watching sports content as an example of how the interface enables multitasking on a single screen.
Apple also launched a new app simply called TV, a cross-platform app focused on searching, discovering, and saving content to watch. The company says it will “completely change how we watch television.”
“Using apps on Apple TV, iPhone and iPad has become the primary way for so many of us to watch television,” said Eddy Cue, Apple’s senior vice president of Internet Software and Services. “The TV app shows you what to watch next and easily discover TV shows and movies from many apps in a single place.”
Siri also got some attention, now accepting voice commands to automatically tune into live streams across Apple TV apps.
