When Apple unveiled the iPhone 7, it announced that the iconic smartphone was coming in a brand new color. Called “jet black” the silky smooth finish has a nice sheen to it—but, apparently, it’s also rather difficult to manufacture.

This year, jet black is the most popular color, which is compounding Apple’s problems with supply and demand. There is a global shortage, according to iStockNow—and according to according to KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, it’s because as many as 40% of units in jet black do not pass Apple’s quality standards.

Apple says the color is achieved through a complicated nine-step anodization and polishing process.

The rest of the colors for iPhone 7 have been shipping in line with previous years’ launches.
