Apple is tidying up the App Store. The company is rolling out changes to make search more effective and clean up abandoned apps.
“To make it easier for customers to find great apps that fit their needs, we want to ensure that apps available on the App Store are functional and up-to-date,” Apple says. “We are implementing an ongoing process of evaluating apps, removing apps that no longer function as intended, don’t follow current review guidelines, or are outdated.”
Outdated or abandoned apps will be removed from the app store, though existing users will continue to be able to use the apps—they just won’t show up in searches for new downloads. Apple is also tackling apps that try to cheat SEO with long, keyword-based names.
As of June, there are two million iOS apps in the App Store. They have been downloaded 130 billion times since 2008.
