Is Google Working on a Secret Virtual Reality Project?
Google isn’t afraid of trying and failing. Some things fail, such as the company’s social networks and its Glass headset, but others have been smashing successes, such as its Android mobile operating system.
Glass showed Google is interested in altering our perceived reality, and that interest was further evidenced by Cardboard, the company’s low-budget headset that lets curious consumers dabble to basic virtual reality. There’s also Daydream, a mobile VR platform Google unveiled earlier this month. But apparently Google is working on something much bigger now, though, in this space—but the company is not wont to discuss details.
A standalone virtual reality system has been secretly in the works at Google since at least the start of the year, and despite recent suggestions the project was shelved, reports point to something in the works—whatever it is. According to sources cited in Engadget, “a Google team is still working on a dedicated headset that blurs the line between virtual reality and augmented reality.”
Google, of course, is far from alone in this space. Microsoft is working on the HoloLens; Facebook owns the Oculus Rift; and HTC has the Vive, among other competitors. But we can always expect some of the most interesting ideas to hail from Google, where creative streaks always keep us intrigued.
