In Significant Shift in Strategy, Snapchat Launches Memories to Save Snaps

Snapchat, known for the fleeting moments it creates through its app, is reconsidering the temporary component of its platform that got it so far.

The app has launched Memories, a new way to save Snaps and Stories on Snapchat. Effectively it’s a Camera Roll inside the app.

Snapchat says you can use Memories to create new Stories from Snaps you’ve taken, or even combine different Stories into a longer narrative. According to the company, if you post a Snap you took more than a day ago to your Story, it will appear with a frame around it so that everyone knows it’s from the past.

Memories is being rolled out over the next month. It’s already considered one of the biggest changes made to Snapchat since the company launched five years ago.

Snapchat currently has more than 150 million daily users. While Memories is likely a long-term play at monetization—the company is still generating very minimal revenue relative to its steep valuation—the feature currently includes no revenue-generating products.
