Unless you have been living under a rock, you know that with the new majority Liberal Government, Canada is poised to be the first G7 country to legalize marijuana for recreational use.
With that will come a boom of producers, distributors and retailers who will operate and supply this fast growing industry. One of the most widely demanded products during this green rush will be the modern day technological marvel that is the marijuana vaporizer.
For those of us who have not had a visit with our friend mary jane in a while, the vaporizer is a device that has become popular in the last decade for being a safer alternative to smoking weed, which consists of inhaling a vapour created by heating up your bud.
Robin Ellis is the owner of The Friendly Stranger, which is the one of most notable marijuana product stores in Toronto.
“A vaporizer is a tool used to imbibe the active ingredients from your favourite herb, without combustion or smoke,” he explains. He goes on to say that true vaporizers gently heat up the product between 180 – 220 degrees Celsius and this releases the active ingredient. In the case of pot, that active ingredient would be THC. “[Vaporizing] eliminates tar and smoke as well as providing 80 – 90% of the active ingredients, while traditional combustion only releases 18 – 24%.”
If you are looking for one of these devices, Robin suggests you do some research before you buy.
“Consumers need to be aware that there is a plethora of products on the market being promoted as vaporizers when indeed they are not,” he says. “To make matters worse, there is another industry selling vaporizers as e-cigarettes that take liquids. A true vaporizer does not produce smoke or ash.”
He goes on to point out what to look for and the investment one will need. “In order to create a true vapour experience, the units tend to be slightly larger, and definitely more expensive. Be prepared to invest over $100 in order to obtain a worthwhile product. As always you get what you pay for, by spending more up-front you are guaranteed to have a better overall experience and a far better quality vaporizer.”
Whenever the laws finally change and we start seeing marijuana on retail shelves across Canada is a question for Justin Trudeau. But necessity is the mother of invention and when the masses are finally able to consume marijuana at their convenience, most people will look for an invention that allows them to ingest their favourite herb without having to smoke it. No doubt the vaporizer will be the supply that meets the demand.
