The Internet of Things still has a lot of holes. As a result, home security systems—well, they just aren’t very secure, ironically enough.
As many as 25 billion devices could be connected via IoT by 2020, but severe deficiencies in areas like authorization and interfaces make this a dangerous breeding ground for all manner of hacks and exploitation, according to HP Fortify.
The Federal Trade Commission recommends, but does not require, that IoT manufacturers incorporate security into the design of their connected products. Your home security can be secure—reasonably so, at least—but it requires paying attention. Otherwise, you could be doing more harm than good.
