With a marketshare that has shrunk from more than 40% to less than 1% in just five years, it’s fair to wonder why BlackBerry still develops hardware.
“A lot of people ask me why I’m in the device business,” admitted John Chen to USA Today.
According to Chen, there’s two reasons: one, there is the potential to make a lot of money, although only Apple is managing to do that right now. More important though, perhaps, is the second reason.

“It’s our first entry point of security,” Chen explained. “If we can secure the device, it makes securing the software and the data management and the collaboration and file sharing and content and pictures and videos and everything that much more easier. So this is why all the governments in the major developed countries are using our devices. You can see the heads of state using our devices.”
