76% of Canadians Filed Their Tax Returns Online This Year

Canadians continue to lead the world in digital adoption.

The Canada Revenue Agency said this week that more than 76% of income tax returns have been filed online so far. This is up 17% from last year alone.

As a result of the convenience of electronic filing, more Canadians are filing sooner, the CRA says. As of June 20, 20 million returns had been filed, three million more than by the same date last year.

By mid-June, the CRA had received just six million paper returns, down a sharp 30% from the nearly nine million sent in by mid-June in 2012.

According to the agency, the average Canadian refund was $1,641.
