The Future of Education? First ‘Samsung School’ in Canada Opens

Samsung has launched its first “Samsung School” at an secondary school in BC.

Riverside Secondary in Port Coquitlam, a city just outside of Vancouver, is playing host to Samsung’s project, the first such pilot in Canada. The Samsung School, described by the company as “the classroom of the future,” is a thoroughly integrated educational solution that uses technology to empower both teachers and students.

The Samsung School integrates Galaxy Note 10.1 tablets (one per student) with a 65-inch digitial e-board. As an example of usage, a teacher can display content on students’ tablets and see each student’s screen as a thumbnail on her own screen, giving her the ability to monitor their progress. It also allows teachers to teach from anywhere in the classroom or while walking around, eradicating the traditional positioning of a teacher at the head of the room.

“Samsung School is the classroom of the future, and it’s here today for Canadian teachers and students,” says Philippe Lozier, Director of Business Solutions for Samsung Canada. “In a technology-savvy world, educators have been eager to see digital classroom innovation move beyond just piecemeal device integration and toward a fully integrated solution. The pilot program in partnership with Riverside Secondary School will help us showcase that the solution is here and ready, and can give educators the ability to digitally engage their students like never before.”

To date, 21 schools around the world have piloted Samsung School. Samsung says research has shown improvements in class convenience, student engagement and lesson comprehension when its educational technology is equipped.

“Although we’ve only just introduced Samsung School, it’s already bringing such a dynamic energy to the classroom,” notes Anthony Ciolfitto, Principal of Riverside Secondary School. “As educators, there is nothing more fulfilling than seeing a class full of students who are engaged and excited to learn. This is revolutionizing the classroom experience for our students and teachers alike.”
